With the continuous progress of science and technology, the demand for network transmission speed is getting higher and higher, especially in cloud computing, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things and other fields, the demand for network transmission speed is getting higher and higher. In recent years, 1.25G optical modules and 10G optical modules have become the main means of network transmission, but with the arrival of the 800G era, whether 1.25G optical modules and 10G optical modules are still used has become a hot topic. This paper will analyze the advantages and disadvantages of 1.25G optical modules and 10G optical modules from both technical and market perspectives, as well as their application prospects in the 800G era.

1,  Technical perspective

1.1  1.25Gbps optical module

1.25Gbps optical modules are one of the most widely used optical modules, with a transmission rate of 1.25Gbps, suitable for most enterprise networks and data centers. 1.25Gbps optical modules usually use a transmission rate of 1.25Gbps, the use of SFP package, transmission distance from 550m-120km. Compared with other optical modules, 1.25G optical modules have low price and low power consumption, which is very suitable for small and medium-sized enterprises.

1.2  10G optical module

The 10G optical module is a high-speed optical module, and its transmission rate can reach 10Gbps, which is 10 times that of the gigabit optical module. 10G optical module is more common is the use of SFP+ package, transmission distance from 300m to 80km. 10G optical modules are widely used in high-speed transmission scenarios such as data centers and enterprise networks. However, the price and power consumption of 10G optical modules are slightly higher than that of 1.25G optical modules. The power consumption of 1.25G optical modules is less than 1W, and the power consumption of 10G optical modules is usually between 1 and 1.5W.

Nowadays, CWDM BiDi, CWDM IND, CWDM long-haul & Mux/Demux from C-light are widely used in 10G/100G situation

1.3   800G optical module

The 800G optical module is one of the most advanced optical modules at present, and its transmission rate can reach 800Gbps. At present, the product system used in the 800G optical module is still rapidly improving, and it can achieve 2km transmission, which can fully meet the transmission needs of the data center. As the most advanced optical module today, the price of 800G optical module is still relatively expensive, and the power consumption is about 16W.

1.25G optical module, 10G optical module, and 800G optical module have their own advantages. The 1.25G optical module is suitable for Gigabit Ethernet, small and medium-sized enterprises, and low-speed transmission scenarios, and has a low price. The 10G optical module is suitable for high-speed transmission scenarios such as 10G Ethernet and enterprise networks, and has a very high cost performance. At present, the price and cost of high-speed transmission scenarios such as 800G optical modules in large data centers are relatively high.

2,  Market perspective

2.1  1.25G optical module market

The 1.25G optical module has a large market demand and low price, and is suitable for transmission scenarios of small and medium-sized enterprises. With the continuous progress of science and technology, the transmission rate of 1.25G optical modules has been unable to meet the needs of some high-speed transmission scenarios, but it is still widely used in small and medium-sized enterprises and low-speed transmission scenarios, such as data transmission, synchronous interconnection and media conversion applications.

2.2   10G optical module market

10G optical modules connect servers and storage devices to network devices to support large-scale data center applications. The 10G optical module has a very high cost performance and is still widely used in high-speed transmission scenarios such as data centers and enterprise networks.

2.3   800G optical module market

The market demand for 800G optical modules is relatively small, and the price and cost are high, which is suitable for ultra-high-speed transmission scenarios. With the continuous progress of science and technology, 800G optical module has a very broad application prospect, especially in cloud computing, artificial intelligence, Internet of Things and other fields, 800G optical module will have a wider range of applications.

To sum up, 1.25G optical modules, 10G optical modules and 800G optical modules have their own characteristics and market demands: 1.25G optical modules are suitable for gigabit Ethernet and small and medium-sized enterprise transmission scenarios, 10G optical modules are suitable for 10G Ethernet and enterprise network transmission scenarios, and 800G optical modules are suitable for large data centers, cloud computing, artificial intelligence and other fields. With the continuous progress of science and technology, the demand for network transmission speed is also increasing, even so, 1.25G optical modules, 10G optical modules are still a wide range of demand, they are enough to meet the network needs of our daily life. With the advent of the ultra-high-speed era, gigabit optical modules may eventually be replaced, but because of technology, cost and other reasons, the replacement will be a long process.

3,  100G and 25G transceiver

The 100G optical module is used to connect cloud servers, VMS, and network devices for fast data transmission and network connection. It is widely used in data centers, telecom operators, cloud computing and other areas that require high-capacity data transmission and high-speed connectivity.

Its function is used for the interconnection of data center servers and switches, 25G optical modules can provide the most energy-efficient way to meet the growing needs of data center networks.

C-light DCI application Transceiver SR, LR, AOC, DAC from 10G~400G are great choice for 10G/25G/40G/100G/400G application

The 25G optical module has a higher port density, which can save operating costs by reducing the number of TOR switches and cables.

Compared with 10G Ethernet, the optimal input/output performance and optical fiber capacity of 25G optical modules are 2.5 times that of 10G Ethernet. Compared with 100G optical module, 25G optical module has less loss; Compared with the optical module that uses four 10G fibre channels to achieve 40G transmission rate, the 25G optical module is a better choice by using two Fibre channels to achieve 50G transmission rate, because the cost is lower.
