What is ODN

ODN is an FTTH optical cable network based on PON equipment, mainly to provide optical transmission channels between OLT and ONU. From the functional point of view, ODN can be divided into feeder optical cable subsystem, distribution optical cable subsystem, household line optical cable subsystem, and optical fiber terminal subsystem from the central office to the user end.

The ODN network construction cost is relatively high, up to 50% to 70% of the overall investment, which is the focus of FTTx investment. At the same time, it is also a difficult point in FTTx management. ODN mostly adopts P2MP topology, there are many connection nodes in the network, and network management is complicated. Optical fiber is more sensitive than copper wire and more easily damaged. Therefore, efficient construction, operation, and maintenance of ODN are essential. A smart and accurate management solution is needed to ensure that the ODN network is fully utilized and effectively protect long-term investment.

In chapter 10.6.2 on the fourth edition of the "Computer Network" textbook of the Electronic Industry Press, ODN is understood as Optical Distribution Node, that is, optical distribution node. Refers to the fiber node of the analog fiber in HFC (Hybrid Fiber Coax), which is used to connect the analog fiber.

In the development of FTTx , the access layer needs to build a huge optical fiber distribution network, namely the ODN network. ODN network construction cost is high, which can account for up to 50%-70% of the total investment, which is the focus of FTTx investment. At the same time, ODN is also a difficult point in FTTx management. First of all, compared with the simple P2P structure of copper wire, ODN mostly adopts P2MP topology, there are many connection nodes in the network, and network management is complicated. At present, how to scientifically manage ODN networks has become the focus of attention of major operators and standards organizations such as ITU-T.


Basic structure


ODN includes 5 parts: feeder section, optical cable distribution point, distribution section, optical cable access point and entrance section. The feeder section from the ODF (optical distribution frame) of the central office room to the optical cable distribution point is used as the backbone optical cable to achieve long-distance coverage; Carrying out the nearest distribution of optical fiber; the entry section from the user's access point to the terminal realizes the entry of optical fiber into the home.



The OLT optical line terminal is generally installed and used in the operator's computer room; the ONU optical cable line unit is used at the user end and is generally installed in the corridor unit. ODN optical distribution network, including backbone optical cables, optical splitters, optical cross boxes, user optical cables, etc.

Since the typical distance of ODN in FTTH is 5~10 km, and the length of optical cable reel is generally 1~4 km, in order to extend the optical cable to the user’s home, there are ODF, SSC, FDT, FAT, ATB, TB and other ODN node equipment.
