It is mainly used in 25G Ethernet and 100G (4x25Gbps) Ethernet. The 25G SFP28 optical module has two types: 25G-SFP28 LR and 25G-SFP28 SR. What is the difference between the two types?

25G-SFP28 LR module
The 25G-SFP28 LR module is a hot-swappable SFP28 package optical transceiver with a center wavelength of 1310nm. It is mainly used for long-distance data transmission with a transmission distance of up to 10 kilometers. It complies with multiple standards and specifications such as IEEE 802.3, SFF-8472, SFF-8402, SFF-8432, and SFF-8431. It uses a DFB laser and a PIN photodetector. Both the transmitter and receiver have built-in CDRs, which are mainly used in 25G Ethernet.

25G-SFP28 SR module
The 25G-SFP28 SR optical transceiver is a single-channel, pluggable SFP28 module with a center wavelength of 850 nm. It is mainly used for short-distance data transmission in switches, routers, network interfaces (NICs) and storage network devices of 25G Ethernet. The most important feature of 25G-SFP28 SR module is that the internal emitter is a vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL), so it needs to be used with OM3/OM4 multimode fiber with a fiber diameter of 50/125μm. Its maximum transmission distance is up to 70m in multimode OM3 and up to 100m in multimode OM4. The SFP-25G-SR module supports the DOM (Digital Optical Surveillance) function, which helps the network management to monitor all aspects of the optical module in real time.
