SFP+ vs SFP

Since the emergence of 1x9 optical modules around 1995, in just a few years, the optical communication market has introduced the GBIC and SFP Module (Small Form-Factor Pluggable) with the hot-pluggable and miniaturization of the MSA SFF8472 standard. Since the SFP is half the size of the GBIC, the design of the connector is more comply with the development of technology. With the introduction of the Golden Finger, the SFP optical module has been a successful 20-year history. The founder of C-LIGHT has been involved in the optical communication module market since 2002, and in 2011, the first year of the company, the company also completed the independent design and production of the SFP 100Mbps / 1.25Gbps / 2.5Gbps product line.

Around 2003, as the optical communication rate doubled to 10.3125 Gbps, a new generation of 10.3125 Gbps optical modules such as XENPAK/X2 appeared in the market. In the 2008 market, 10.3125 Gbps SFP+ (Small Form-Factor Pluggable Plus) optical modules, which are several times smaller than XENPAK/X2, have become popular. C-LIGHT also launched the SFP+ BIDI SR LR ER ZR CWDM DWDM in 2013.

Compared with SFP, the main difference of SFP+ is that the data rate of the product is 6G 8G 10G 12Gbps, and the data rate of SFP is mainly 100M 622M 1.25G 2.5G 3.125G. SFP+ is actually the same size as the SFP in terms of MSA SFF8472 protocol, size, and there is nothing special about it. In terms of optical module gold finger design, SFP+ also uses the SFP PIN pin definition compared to SFP. So in terms of structure size and interface definition, SFP+ is not particularly different from SFP. As for the addition of "+" after the SFP, it is probably purely to tell it apart from the data rate of the SFP.

By 2018, SFP has been popular in the market for 20 years, and SFP+ has also been in the market for 10 years. With regard to the current development of technology and market, SFP+ still cannot replace each other compared with SFP. The main reason is that 1) function, under working conditions, SFP+ performance is not much higher than SFP, or even slightly worse. 2) In terms of cost, it takes at least 2~3 years to make it possible to shorten the cost of SFP+ and SFP. So in the next five years, SFP+ and SFP products will still dominate the market, but prices and profits will fall sharply.
