Why choose 10 Gigabit SFP+ optical transceiver module?

In recent years, 10G optical Ethernet interface technology has developed very rapidly. At the same time, as desktop and server connections continue to upgrade to Ethernet and Gigabit Ethernet, the core data center and backbone network interconnects are increasingly demanding bandwidth.

These have prompted the 10G optical Ethernet interface to enter the commercial market, and its market share continues to expand. However, due to the high cost, the current 10-Gbit/sec application has not spread rapidly in the market as predicted.

Thus, a new optical transceiver solution stands out. The high port density and low cost SFP+ optical modules provide enterprise users with a cost-effective 10 Gigabit Ethernet upgrade solution that is more cost-effective than previous technologies.

The SFP+ module is an upgrade of the SFP optical module (sometimes called "mini-GBIC"). In the development of Gigabit Ethernet and 1G, 2G, 4G Fibre Channel, SFP optical modules have been widely used. In order to adapt to higher data rates, the 10 Gigabit SFP+ module has designed enhanced electromagnetic shielding and signal protection characteristics superior to SFP modules, and has developed new electrical interface specifications.

In order to upgrade the 4G Fibre Channel currently used in SAN networks, the ANSI T11 standardization team has conducted in-depth research with the SFP+ MSA organization, hoping to standardize 8G Fibre Channel 10 Gigabit SFP+ optical modules. At the same time, the SFP+ MSA team is also working on the technical specifications for 10G Ethernet SFP+ modules.

10 Gigabit optical transceiver can transmit and receive 10 Gigabit data signals per second. Currently, optical transceivers such as XENPAK, X2, XFP, and SFP+ (small pluggable) are widely used in 10 Gigabit Ethernet. Why choose 10 Gigabit SFP+ optical transceiver module?

1. SFP+ has a more compact form factor (same size as SFP) than X2 and XFP packages. The SFP+ module consumes less DC power than the XENPAK, X2, and XFP modules.

2.Because SFP+ motherboard designers have pre-considered high-speed design work, 10 Gigabit SFP+ modules achieve higher density at 10 Gigabit Ethernet fiber connections at lower cost. The SFP+ optical transceiver can provide the maximum number of ports for any 10-Gbit/sec module.

3.Another advantage of the 10 Gigabit SFP+ optical module is that it has a significant reduction in cost while ensuring that performance is not lost to other existing modules. Cost reduction comes from two aspects, one is to eliminate the cost of excess silicon; the other is simple design and testing can reduce production costs. This makes SFP+ a low-cost, high-quality Gigabit Ethernet transceiver.
